Layla of Dumnonia was briefly an associate of the First Inspector. She was played by Irish actress Bernadette O'Farrell during Season 3.

Adventures with the First Inspector[]

Layla first appeared in "The Legend Locators", in which the Inspector and his associates Nikki and Trevor Saylor must locate and rescue Nikola Tesla's temporally stranded friend and lab partner, Sam, who has vanished in a time-travel experiment. After the Inspector tracks him down to fifth-century Britain, they first encounter the Lady Layla of the Kingdom of Dumnonia—an English noblewoman fighting a losing battle against the looming Dark Ages. Together they save Sam from a warlord called Rigotamos who has dragooned him into serving as court magician. In the conclusion, Sam announces that their adventure provided him with the inspiration for a novel, and Layla joins the Inspector and his crew to see the future.

Death[]

Although Layla found it difficult to reconcile her chivalric code of honour with modern concepts of law and order, she made a heroic sacrifice halfway through the epic serial "The Blorgons' Cunning Scheme" to save the Inspector. As he observed, "She wanted to save our lives, and likewise the lives of all other beings of the galaxy. I believe she upheld her panache."

Since the serials in which she appeared are unfortunately lost, she is remembered chiefly as the first Associate to show how anyone can die in the programme.
