An example of everyday cosplay
Cosplay (from the Japanese, コスプレ kosupure, itself a portmanteau of the English words "costume" and "play") is the performance art or pastime of wearing costumes and accessories to portray fictional characters, which the Inspectrum fandom has embraced enthusiastically. Dedicated Inspector Spacetime fans regularly dress up as characters from the programme at conventions such as InSpecTiCon, Halloween, Mardi Gras, Purim, LARPs, and fancy dress parties.
While many fans prefer to make their own outfits, BTV has capitalised on the trend by creating their own official clothing lines or licensing the Inspector's trademark fashions to costume-manufacturers as part of their merchandising push. Fans can now buy authorised Eleventh Inspector Mackintoshes, although many still prefer to adopt a white or tan-coloured bathrobe.
